Stories from our 2026 Journalism Camp

Check out our students’ stories below. Plus, order a copy of Perspectives Magazine 2026 to see their articles in print!

Students from Detroit and Metro Detroit attended our 2026 Journalism Camp at Wayne State University. Throughout the two-week program, they were mentored by over 30 professional journalists from local and national news outlets. Each day featured lessons led by coaches on topics such as AP Style, story structure, race and social justice reporting, food reporting, community reporting and much more. Students applied what they learned through hands-on activities, including practice in interviewing and video production. A highlight of the camp was a field trip to The Detroit Free Press, where columnist M.L. Elrick discussed investigative journalism and David Rodriguez Muñoz led a session on photojournalism.

This year, we collaborated with Planet Detroit on stories focused on the environment, health, social justice and community news. Each student researched, wrote, edited and photographed a story on one of these topics. They also worked with an Editing Coach who helped hone their work. Check out their articles in Perspectives Magazine and planetdetroit.org. Note: Stories will be published on a rolling basis through September.

Thank you to our partners and sponsors that made this camp possible: Planet Detroit, Wayne State University Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, The Kresge Foundation, Four Friends Foundation, Automotive Press Association, El Central Hispanic News, All Access Tags and Coaching Detroit Forward donors.
