Stories from Our 2023 Journalism Camp

Photo by photography coach Erin Kirkland

High school students from the city of Detroit, Metro Detroit and even Canada attended our 2023 Journalism Camp at Wayne State University. Over 25 professional journalists based in Detroit and New York coached the students on everything from news and sports reporting, to opinion and feature writing. The group also hopped on the QLine for a field trip to The Detroit News, where the newspaper’s food critic led a tasty food writing lesson.

Over the two weeks, each student wrote a story on a topic of their choice. The young writers picked topics they deeply care about — from the rising cost of living due to inflation to the experience of attending camp for people with muscular dystrophy.

We’re excited to share their articles with you below. Pre-order a copy of Perspectives Magazine to read their stories in print!
