Writer and Entrepreneur Jay Shah

This week’s Writer Wednesday features DWR member Jay Shah!

Jay is a seasoned technical writer, a published memoir writer and a novice fiction writer from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan! He says he looks serious but is known to make people laugh When he’s not writing on his deck, looking at the woods and the lake, you can find him playing golf with friends. Learn more about him below!

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I am writing a flash fictional novel based on my research on India/Burma/China theater during World War II. I would like to keep my writing style in between Salmon Rushdi and Kazuo Ishiguro novels — creative but succinct.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I love using my life experiences with people and places to create a story.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I take my laptop to a variety of places while I am traveling. When I am home I love to write sitting on my deck and looking at the woods and the lake.

When did you first discover your love for writing? Were there any key moments or influences that sparked your passion?

When I was forced to write in the office newsletter I found out that employees enjoyed reading it. I expanded my writing with op-eds in the local newspapers and soon I was invited to write in Corp magazines and journals. My daughter, who is an avid reader, encouraged me to write my memoir. She and I read books remotely together and discuss them. She is a big support and motivator to me.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

I love to travel and learn. I am fortunate to have traveled six continents. At home I love to play golf with friends and strangers that soon become friends.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Normal curiosity and persistence can go a long way!
