Media Industry Operations Manager Timothy Cheng

This week’s Writer Wednesday features DWR member Timothy Cheng!

Timothy is from Canton, Michigan, where he works in book publishing as a media industry operations manager. When he’s not chasing after his toddler, he loves writing essays and powerlifting in his spare time. Read more about him below!

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I have a couple of essays that I keep churning on. I believe one about being a sober dad has promise.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I love, when possible, you can enter a flow and it takes on its own momentum.

What does your writing workspace look like?

Oh, very non-descript. Just a plain white desk from a big box retailer and a laptop.

When did you first discover your love for writing? Were there any key moments or influences that sparked your passion?

I learned to love writing in college. I went to a liberal arts school and writing was a huge focus. I think the first couple of times I shared my writing and got the hopeful, “not perfect, but there’s something there” from professors was one of the key moments. Anything that keeps the spark burning.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

Before my son was born I would compete in the sport of powerlifting, but now I mostly try to keep up with a toddler.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

I’ve always appreciated Stephen King’s notes in his book “On Writing,” to acknowledge that there can be any reason under the sun to want to write, as long as you don’t come lightly to the blank page.
