Writer, Speaker, Comic and Impressionist Karen Bell-Brege
This week’s Writer Wednesday features the creative mind of Writing Room member Karen Bell-Brege!
Based in Brighton, Michigan, Karen is a writer, speaker, comic and impressionist, known for laugh-out-loud picture books like “Bigfoot and the Mitten” — co-created with her husband, Darrin. Read more about her below!
What inspired you to start writing children’s books specifically?
Pretty sure it was my love of laughter and fun. I had been running and performing improv in my troupe at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle for 15 years. And improvisation is basically just writing off the top of your head, making up silly, funny scenes. I had also been a writer in my day job (copywriter, communications specialist) for years. So the thought of sharing fun and funny stories with children seemed to be a perfect fit.
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am wrapping up my latest picture book “Bigfoot, Birdie and Bob.” It’s in those fun back and forth, wrapping up editing stages. And, since my husband is the illustrator we work together on putting the copy together with the graphics.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Coffee and scones. Hahaha…kidding, but that is how I motivate myself to put my bottom in the chair and work. However, for the process, I think the middle is my favorite part. Because once I have my basic premise down (no matter how rough) when I move into refining it and making more of a solid story, I find that exhilarating. For me, that’s where I really start to add humor and form the characters and elaborate on the plot.
You often collaborate with your husband, Darrin, on books and creative projects. What advice would you share with others involved in creative partnerships?
Be kind, patient, flexible and breathe. You won’t always agree, but you are both working toward the same goal. Sometimes your vision aligns and sometimes not, but if you laugh about it and make the process more about teamwork and fun, it makes it a lot easier.
As someone who wears many creative hats — author, voice-over artist, speaker and comic — do you have a favorite role?
I have to say that I get joy from every one of them…but if I did have to pick an absolute favorite I’d have to say that it’s when Darrin and I are presenting at schools. Because we’re sharing all the things we love with the littles — our art, writing, voices and comedy. Just watching their faces light up and seeing how much we’ve inspired them is the best.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
OK, going to sound like we’re super outdoorsy here, and we’re not — but I would have to say rockhounding and kayaking. We spend a lot of time Up North, and the calm and beauty of it really inspires us. It’s where we get some of our best ideas.
