Arborist Jeremiah Sandler

This week’s Writer Wednesday features arborist and writer Jeremiah Sandler of Tree First!

Based in Royal Oak, Michigan, Jeremiah is the author of “A Tree First Approach.” The guide presents a framework for anyone working with trees or interested in taking care of trees. It transforms tree “work” into tree “care.” Learn more about Jeremiah and his work below!

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a collection of essays for a book, with topics ranging from philosophy on trees to more hardcore tree science. It’s written for tree nerds like me. I’m also writing various articles for tree-related things for our website and for a magazine.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

In either the very late hours of the night, or the early hours in the morning, writing in pitch darkness. No light except for the screens. Music optional; all kinds. This isn’t the only way I write, and I don’t always have access to these hours in my schedule, but I find myself very productive in those spaces.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I either write at my desk in my office or in the living room seated in an old Eames chair. I cannot write in public spacing or while outside in nature. Too distracting for me!

In your book “A Tree First Approach,” what inspired you to take a “zoomed-out” approach to tree caretaking?

A simple outline with a clear ethos was lacking in the space. While I tend to write for arborists who are “in the weeds” like myself, this book was written to those just beginning their careers, and those who are less in the weeds.

When I began my career, I was shown forests of literature that were disjointed. Each coming from different philosophies, with different objectives, originating from different soils. I thought it was pertinent to preface this zoomed-out approach with what philosophies form its foundation.

A “Tree First Approach” assembles a lot of disconnected ideas and gives a process to taking care of trees.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

Ultimate frisbee!

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Go on a walk!

Separately, while stuck on a wordy sentence or while struggling to articulate something neatly, try reading the words aloud.
