Tess Crowley
When were you an intern and what did you do?
I was a multimedia intern in the summer of 2022.
What did you learn as an intern?
I learned how to help manage content for social media, which is a great skill to have. I also learned how to be a better interviewer when I worked on a summer-long project interviewing DWR coaches. I put those interviews together in the form of YouTube videos. I had not made videos like those before, so I learned a lot in the process. I am a still photographer, so it was fun for me to branch out and work with video! Most of all, I loved teaching the students about photography. I learned a lot about how to craft lesson plans and teach people about photography in a fun, digestible way. Teaching others taught me a lot!
How has the internship helped you in your career?
The internship helped connect me with journalists in the field, especially through my DWR coach interview series. I loved interviewing all the coaches who were involved in journalism. I learned a lot about the field from working on that project. Stephanie has also been an incredible reference, helping me land various internships afterward. The connections at the DWR and CDF helped me gain many other opportunities in journalism!
Tell us what youβre doing now professionally?
I am a staff photojournalist at the Deseret News, a newspaper in Salt Lake City. I started as a 6-month photojournalism intern with them in January 2025 and was hired as a full-time staff photojournalist in April. I graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2024!
