Author Diane Gottlieb
This week’s Writer Wednesday features author Diane Gottlieb of Coconut Creek, Florida. Diane has an MFA and has recently enjoyed journaling during our Yoga for Writers classes. She’s working on a book and has a few other writing projects up her sleeve!
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I always have a few things going at the same time. Right now, I’m working on my novel and a book-length narrative nonfiction about five formerly incarcerated men. I also write a biweekly blog for women over 50 called “WomanPause.”
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I love it all! I came to a serious writing practice later than most, so I appreciate every minute I have to write. Love the process from first bringing the ideas onto the page in draft form to revision — and revision and revision.
What does your writing workspace look like?
A comfy seat and my laptop — wherever. I write anywhere in the house where it’s quietest at the moment.
What has been your greatest struggle with your novel so far? What has helped you work through it?
Making the switch from writing nonfiction to fiction has been my greatest challenge. Most of my writing to date has been memoir or narrative nonfiction. While writing fiction is great fun and extremely freeing, sometimes I’m not sure what to do with all the choices available regarding plot and character!
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
Does reading count? I cannot separate writing from reading, so, I will have to say walking outdoors on bright sunny days.
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Read. Read. Read. Be inspired by others’ work and then practice. Writing is definitely a practice, and the more you commit to the practice, the more growth you will see in your writing.
